Compare the musical style of Verdi and Wagner. Cite and define terms that describe their general style of operatic writing, and describe the use of melody as well as the relationship between the voice and orchestra.

ANSWER: bel canto vs. Gesamtkunstwerk, soaring melodic lines vs. the use of leitmotif, accompaniment as a big guitar
vs. orchestra providing the real drama through the development of leitmotifs



Answer to Question 2

ANSWER: it plays leitmotifs, not just homophonic chords, that suggest what the character is thinking without anything
being said
