Although a musician, this composer became a leader in the movement for Italian independence. He based many of his
  early operas on dramatic subjects that supported political revolution and freedom. Further, his name served as an
  acronym representing the popular choice of Victor Emanuel as king of a united country and he was elected to the
  countrys first parliament.
