 either unified by military force into a single nation or fractured into separate self-governing states

 largest population of any country in the world (1.3 billion in late 2004)
 China has long been ethnically diverse; 55 nationalities in addition to the majority Han people (who form about 92 of the total population)
 Differing ways of life in various diverse environments
 60 of the population is rural-based, but China has recently seen significant urbanization and industrialization
 . . . urban, professional, and elite musics are every bit as well established as the music of the agricultural classes.
