Answer to Question 1

Time
Mr. Rao joins in on the mridangam playing rhythmic patterns in the adi tala cycle which complement the rhythms of the melody being played on the veena and add density/complexity to the music.
 Pitch
improvisatory melody in Natai raga continues with drone; melody explores the Sarasiruha kriti (song) with varied repetitions of the song's phrases frequently occurring.

Answer to Question 2

Although the words of the song are not audible in an instrumental performance, the musicians and knowledgeable members of the audience know the song text well.
This situation is similar to a Westerner hearing an instrumental version of, say, a familiar pop song or ballad from the Western music culture.
