Answer to Question 1

 This section is the centerpiece of the performance, presenting the song, which is in the same raga and tala as the improvisations surrounding it.

Answer to Question 2

 As in the preceding alapana section, an improvised melody continues with a series of phrases which include strong plucking of drone strings.
 Also as in the alapana, the melody gradually ascends/speeds up and then gradually descends/slows down.
 However, the tanam section has a strong sense of beat which is lacking in the free-flowing, non-metric alapana section
