  • Syama Sastry (1762  1827), Tyagaraja (1767  1847), and



Muttuswamy Dikshitar (1776  1836)

  • Similarities: Both styles use ragas (melodic mode/system) and talas (metric cycle).

  • Differences: In the Hindusthani style of North India expansive improvisations move gradually from near immobility to sections of great speed and virtuosity.



Carnatic music of the south is built around an immense repertoire of pre-composed Hindu devotional songs. The musical texture is busier, and improvisations fall within block-like sections.
