 Bhajans might be sung by a soloist with accompanying instruments or by a vocal group in a call-andresponse manner with instrumental accompaniment (soloist leader sings verses answered by group singing a repetition/refrain).

Answer to Question 2

 A bhajan is a devotional song, relatively simple technically, and sung primarily as an offering to God.
