Answer to Question 1

  • (A) Podhale is no longer an isolated cultural region (if it ever was).

  • (B) Ancient stories and legends from Slovokia and Poland can be reinterpreted and given modern meaning.

  • (C) Themes such as the human desire for independence are probably universal, but no single music is universal. The theme was common in both the reggae and Grale cultures, but the respective musical practices were different and quite distinct. The successful fusion of the two music-cultures came later when the two bands learned to play together live.

Answer to Question 2

  • The entire selection is recognized as fitting within the popular genre of reggae, largely due to the continuous reggae dub--a familiar reggae harmonic/rhythmic ostinato--that is heard throughout the selection. From time to time a Grale kapela (traditional string band) plays krzesany Po Dwa, a gralski dance tune from the regional muzyka Podhala. The traditional instruments used in these parts include basy, violin and whistle. The text, while sung in English, is a loose translation of the original Grale dialect text (e.g., Johnny referred to in the lyrics is a Robin Hood-like symbol of freedom and justice). Modulations (sudden shifts to different key/tonal centers) stand out in the recordingsee Close Listening guide.
