Answer to Question 1

  • Krzystof Trebunia-Tutka was born into a family that came from a long line of musicians. His father reluctantly began teaching Krzysztof how to play the violin and some local dances. This led to Krzysztof's successful joining of a school-sponsored regional dance/music troupe. His father eventually recognized his son's talent and taught him more about regional traditional music, including introducing Krzysztof to various music instruments such as the fugarka (a wooden flute) and the accordion. Subsequently Krzysztof's father let him join the family band and travel to play at various folk festivals. While studying at university Krzysztof started a successful and influential Grale-style song and dance group. This was followed by a worldbeat fusion recording with a Jamaican reggae band that made the popular music charts in Europe. The music featured muyzka Podhala including traditional texts. Today Krzystof is a legitimate pop star in Poland and the Trebunie-Tuki family tours the world playing a deliberate mix of very traditional-style music adapted to modern musical styles. Krzysztof remains grounded in his muzyka Podhalahe even still finds time to teach the basics of this style to young childrenbut he goes beyond the repertory and style of his ancestors to explore other regional and worldbeat-fusion styles.

Answer to Question 2

  • Kyzysztof is respected as one of the finest musicians and dancers in the muzyka Podhale style, carrying on a regional tradition in which some of his distant ancestors participated (great-grandfather) performing the same kind of music. At the same time he believes that traditions must change and adapt in order to stay alive in the present day. To this end he has also played a popular rock/worldbeat-fusion of his music and a reggae band at large urban festivals.
