Answer to Question 1

The drum plays triplets (groups of three notes): 123 123 123 123. (Listen to the example until you can hear the difference between the two drum backgrounds.)

Answer to Question 2

 During the vocal stanzas, the drum plays a shuffle beat/rhythm (long- short, long-short . . .). By connecting together the first two notes in each group of three 1 2 3, 1 2 3, 1 2 3, 1 2 3, the rhythm becomes 1__ 3, 1__ 3, 1__ 3, 1 __ 3 = long-short, long-short, long-short, long-short.
