  • Early history from the 7th and 8th centuries where the Qur'an became essential for Muslim ritual and contained guidance on everyday matters including music.

  • Medieval Mesopotamia (8th  13th centuries) - Musical life in medieval Baghdad was described through the writings of Al-Isbahani.

  • Ottoman Empire (1326  1918) and the colonial era  adoption of Western musical ideas including modern instruments

  • Study of Arab music persisted into the twentieth century with, for example, the assembling of Arab and European music scholars in the Congress of Arab Music in 1932.

  • The Muslim world consists of all the countries where Islam is the prominent religion, including the Middle East, the Arab World and countries in south and southeast Asia, such as Indonesia, Pakistan, India, and Bangladesh.
