Answer to Question 1

Gaining entry refers to the initial part of the music ethnography project when the student gains entry into the musical situation he/she has chosen to study. This initial contact is very important because it establishes contact with the experts--referred to as consultants, e.g., musicians in this situation--who can provide students with first hand information from the field.

Answer to Question 2

Immerse yourself in the musical situation, consider what aspects of it interest you, select a topic, and plan how to collect information. Allow enough time for revision of your plans if needed.
