 Variations of the balungan melody are occurring simultaneously at various tempi creating a heterophony that is so complex some scholars classify the resulting texture as polyphony. As polyphony this music is heard as stratified layers of independent melodies rather than embellished versions of the same melody occurring together at the same time.
