What does pathet literally mean? How does the literal meaning of pathet relate to its musical meaning in gamelan music (use Worlds of Music, p. 355).

 Pathet literally means limit.
 In the case of gamelan music it means placing limitations on the piece in questionwhich tones will be emphasized in the balungan melody, pitch level of other parts, the mood (for example, calm or agitated), or the time of performance during the day/night.
