Answer to Question 1

The phrases generally descend from high to low pitches.

This piece is based on a C major scale: C D E F G A B C. Note the lowering or flatting of the 3rd scale-degree (EEb) and the 7th scale-degree (BBb) in the recorded selection and its transcription in Worlds of Music (Tr. 4-7, p. 159). In the first stanza, list the words that are sung with blue notes (sliding up and down on pitches).
Blue notes occur in the first stanza on the words:
Hey . . . (morn)ings . . . morn(ings) . . . won't . . . long. . . . me . . . (cap)tain . . . gone.

Form: How many stanzas are sung in the recorded selection? How many lines are sung in each stanza?
 Two stanzas
Two lines (sentences) in each stanza.

Answer to Question 2

The flow and rhythm of the text (which makes it difficult to sing along with)
