 (1) A musical texture featuring unison singing to the accompaniment of a steady drumbeat performed on the big drum. (See Worlds of Music, Figure 2.11, p. 68).
 (2) A high-pitched, tense, loud vocal production is generally preferred, although again this differs by region and singing group.
 (3) A terraced, descending melodic line is the typical melodic shape of a Northern song. . .
 (4)  . . . rhythmic displacement' of melody and drumbeat, the melody being sung slightly behind or slightly ahead of the drum beat.

Answer to Question 2

 Sometimes called Intertribal powwows
 They feature song and dance competitions and sometimes cash prizes
 Traditional powwows do not offer competitions and prizes
 Traditional powwows emphasize community and intertribal friendship
