The difference between Thoreaus and present-day soundscapes illustrates the changing nature of soundscapes throughout history. What were some of the acoustical (aural or heard) features of Henry David Thoreaus wilderness soundscape? Why did he leave out certain features? (Examples may vary.)

  • Many soundscape ecologists believe that every nonhuman species communicates its own acoustic niche. Humans also make their own acoustic niches and interact sonically with nonhuman sounds.



Answer to Question 2

 The sound (unpleasant to Thoreau) of a steam engine whistle.
 Since he was describing his wilderness soundscape, he omitted the features of farm and city soundscapes of the mid-nineteenth-century.
