 In his youth, Mapfumo played rock music from Britain and the United States, which shows that Africa is not isolated, and that Africans play music which originated elsewhere.
 The Chimurenga style shows respect of tradition while also being dynamic and contemporary.
 The music has deep meaning that connects to important features of history and the present-day situation.
