Answer to Question 1

Pressure pushing on one side of the manometer forces the liquid in that side of the manometer down and raises the level of the liquid on the other side. The pressure reading is the difference between the two liquid levels.

Answer to Question 2

If the trial for ignition fails, then the first main valve operator de-energizes and closes flow to the pilot burner, stopping gas flow. The ignition process may repeat several times before lockout occurs. Depending on the manufacturer's setup, lockout may automatically reset after an hour or more or it may have to be reset manually. Both the automatic and manual ignition lockouts can be reset manually by turning the power off for a few seconds, then powering up again.
