Answer to Question 1

Pilot gas is fed to the assembly and burner orifice. The spark electrode is positioned to ignite the gas on a signal from the room thermostat. With the pilot ignited and burning, a sensing probe establishes an electric current sufficient to energize a relay that opens the main gas valve by closing normally open electrical contacts. At the same time the relay's normally closed electrical contacts in the spark ignition circuit open, terminating the spark. As long as the sensing probe recognizes the pilot flame, the relay coil will be energized, and normally closed contacts in the spark ignition system will remain open.

Answer to Question 2
