The orifice meters the gas into the burner.

Answer to Question 2

Don't turn anything on until you have inspected the furnace Check for the presence of gas in the area around the furnace. Make sure there are no combustible items stored near the furnace. Check the vent.
Check for combustion air.

Do not position yourself directly in front of the furnace while it is lighting. Once the furnace lights, check the vent to make sure it is working.
