Answer to Question 1

The automatic expansion valve is a refrigerant pressure regulator. It is controlled by a diaphragm that balances the evaporator pressure against an adjustable spring pressure.

Answer to Question 2

The high current draw of electric furnaces generates heat at the point of a bad connection and degrades the connections and the wires.
