Answer to Question 1

Once distinct, the boundary between safety and environmental issues has become increasingly blurred. As companies meet a growing list of federal, state, and local environmental regulations, safety and health professionals are finding themselves called upon to deal with a burgeoning environmental compliance workload. At some companies, they're being given direct responsibility for environmental clientsin addition to their current safety and health duties. At other companies, they are assuming supervisory responsibilities for the work of environmental specialists.

Answer to Question 2

A management system, regardless of its application, is the component of a company responsible for leading, planning, organizing, and controlling. An environmental management system (EMS) is the component of an organization with primary responsibility for these functions as they relate specifically to the impact of a company's processes, products, and/or services on the environment.
