Much progress has been made in cleaning up and protecting the environment since Congress initially became interested in the 1960s. During the 1960s and the 1970s, Congress passed a continual proliferation of environmental regulations aimed primarily at air, water, and ground pollution. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), substantial progress has been made in cleaning up air and water pollution in the following areas since the 1970s:
 Carbon monoxide emissions
 Volatile organic compounds
 Sulfur oxides
 Ocean dumping of industrial waters
 Cities without adequate sewage treatment
 Polluted rivers

Answer to Question 2

It can help reduce hazards in the workplace in the following ways: a) hazard elimination by design, b) provision and location of safety devices, c) provision of warning devices, d) establishment of procedures and the provision of training.
