Answer to Question 1

An effective technique is to listen during the interview and make mental notes of critical information. At the end of the interview, summarize what you have heard and have the witness verify your summary. Develop notes immediately when witness leaves.

Answer to Question 2

Interviews should begin as soon as the witness list has been complied, and then proceed expeditiously because a witness's recollections will be best right after the accident and avoids the possibility of witnesses comparing notes and changing their stories.
