Answer to Question 1

Suspension scaffolds operate on the same principle as suspension bridges. They are suspended from an overhead support structure by ropes, cables, or other non-rigid devices. Support devices include rigger beams, cornice hooks, parapet clamps, and other similar devices. OSHA mandates that all such support devices rest on surfaces that meet one of the following requirements: 1) can support at least four times the operating load of the scaffold; or 2) can support 1.5 times the scaffold load when operating at the stall load of the hoist. Whichever of these two requirements is greater is the one that applies.

Answer to Question 2

Scaffold platforms and walkways must be at least 18 inches wide except for ladder jack, top plate bracket, and pump jack scaffolds which may be 12 inches wide. In areas too narrow to accommodate an 18-inch wide platform or plank, the walking surface must be as wide as possible and workers must be protected by either guard rails or personnel fall arrest systems.
