Answer to Question 1

A pumped storage hydroelectric dam uses two reservoirs; one is located at a much higher elevation than the other. The lower reservoir has a turbine and generator as in a conventional dam but the generator can double as a motor to pump water to the upper reservoir during low electrical peak hours. During the highest peak times, water is released from the upper reservoir to generate power.

Answer to Question 2

The ROR type dam has only a small effect on river flow and it does not require a large reservoir of water like the conventional hydroelectric dam.
