Answer to Question 1

Line voltage is measured between lines; phase voltage is measured with respect to the components within the three-phase wye or delta connection. Line voltage and phase voltage are the same in the delta connection.

Answer to Question 2

The magnitude of the output ac is controlled by the exciter current supplied to the field and the exciter output can easily be controlled as the load demand changes. In addition, the use of an exciter enables the main generator output to be taken from the stator, eliminating the need for slip rings and brushes in series with the output.
