You can set up a steady rest when the shaft has no center by:
 
  A) Holding the workpiece in a three jaw chuck
  B) Placing a punch mark in the center of the shaft and measuring to the steady rest frame with a steel rule. Adjust jaws to center the mark
  C) Holding the workpiece in a four jaw chuck
  D) Placing a punch mark in the center of the shaft and adjusting the steady rest jaws to align the punch mark to the tailstock center
