(1) A hot solid, liquid, or dense gas emits electromagnetic radiation at all wavelengths and produces a continuous spectrum.
(2) An excited, low-density gas produces an emission, or bright-line, spectrum containing emission lines.
(3) A light source viewed through a low-density gas produces an absorption, or dark-line, spectrum containing absorption lines.
