Answer to Question 2

Binding energy is the amount of energy needed to completely separate an electron from an atom. It is caused by the Coulomb force, which causes the negatively charged electrons to be attracted to the positively charged protons in the nucleus. The size of an electron's orbit is related to the energy that binds it to the atom. The closer the orbit an electron is to its nucleus, the more tightly bound. The farther the orbit an electron is to its nucleus, the more loosely bound.
