Answer to Question 1

The gravitational field of one galaxy can remove material from another galaxy producing tidal tails, or shells of stars and gas. This is evidence of the process of galactic cannibalism. The gravitational tides that occur during a collision can compress gas and dust in a galaxy, triggering a sudden wave of star formation. Starburst galaxies are the result of collisions or strong interactions between galaxies.Galaxies that have merged may show more than one dense nucleus, if the merged galaxies have not stabilized into a single nucleus yet.Ring galaxies show a ring of material shocked and compressed by a bulls-eye collision where one galaxy passes through the center of another.Magellanic clouds and dwarf galaxies around the Milky Way are being pulled apart by tidal forces as the small galaxies are cannibalized by our galaxy.
