Who discovered the period-luminosity relationship, and why was it so critical?

Henrietta Leavitt discovered the period-luminosity relationship for Cepheid variables in 1908, which later allowed astronomers to use them as a cosmic yardstick and recognize our Sun's true position in our Galaxy, as well as our Galaxy's true place in the universe.
