The carbon dioxide so abundant on our neighbors was first dissolved in the Earth's early water oceans, then deposited beneath them in carbonate rocks such as limestone. Also, photosynthesis took much of the remaining carbon dioxide and water and combined them to make carbohydrates and release oxygen into our unique atmosphere.
