When a mass has contracted to a certain radius, the Schwartzschild radius, gravity at its surface is so high that the escape velocity is the speed of light. The event horizon is the imaginary surface of a sphere with this radius. Even if the mass continues shrinking, anything passing inside this radius cannot escape the pull of gravity.
