Inferring cloud properties using carbon-monoxide: At the low temperatures of molecular clouds, carbon monoxide emits radio light more strongly than does molecular hydrogen.

The hydrogen-to-CO ratio must be assumed, as well as assuming that the two molecules are well mixed.
