The minerals in rocks contain small amounts of radioactive isotopes (for example carbon-14 or potassium-40). Over time, these isotopes decay into a different, stable element. By precisely counting the atoms of the original isotopes and decay products within a rock, and knowing the decay time (the half-life) of the radioactive isotope, the age can be determined.
