Answer to Question 1

A

Answer to Question 2

Both are the result of a binary system consisting of a white dwarf and a stellar companion. If less than 1.4 solar masses, the white dwarf will blow off a shell of accreted matter in a nova explosion. But if enough mass is added to the white dwarf to push it over Chandrasekhar's limit, it will explode as a Type I supernova.
