It made the first successful soft landing on a moon other than Earth's.

Answer to Question 2

Angular momentum must be conserved. As the cloud contracts the rotating mass of gas is closer to its axis. In order for the angular momentum to remain the same, the cloud must spin faster, much as an ice skater spins faster when she brings her arms close to her body.
