The NEAR (Near-Earth Asteroid Rendezvous) mission first flew past Mathilde, revealing it to be less dense than any other asteroid. Then it went into orbit about the asteroid Eros, mapping it thoroughly. Finally, it soft-landed on the surface of Eros, the first time a man-made object landed on a minor planet.
