Answer to Question 1

When the Earth hits debris left behind by the break-up of old, short-period comets, these meteors come in swarms that appear to fall from the direction of the comet's orbit in space (the radiant for the shower). The Earth returns to the same point in its orbit every year, and again intercepts some of the comet debris.
