The Earth rotates once on its axis every 23 hours, 56 minutes, and thus turns to face the same distant star in that interval. But we are also revolving around the Sun at one degree eastward per day, hence the Sun appears to have moved eastward from one day to the next, and it takes a full 24 hours to align with the Sun again.
