Suppose you find an X-ray binary system that shows X-ray bursts. Is it possible that this system consists of a red giant and a black hole? Why or why not?

No. X-ray bursts occur when accumulating material on the surface of a neutron star suddenly undergoes nuclear fusion. This cannot happen for a black hole because it has no surface.
