Why is there an upper limit to the mass of a white dwarf?

  A) The more massive the white dwarf, the higher its temperature and hence the greater its degeneracy pressure. Near 1.4 solar masses, the temperature becomes so high that all matter effectively melts into subatomic particles.
  B) White dwarfs come only from stars with masses less than 1.4 solar masses.
  C) The upper limit to the masses of white dwarfs was determined through observations of white dwarfs in binary systems, but no one knows why the limit exists.
  D) The more massive the white dwarf, the greater the degeneracy pressure and the faster the speeds of its electrons. Near 1.4 solar masses, the speeds of the electrons approach the speed of light, and no more mass can be supported.

People who have myopia, or nearsightedness, are not able to see objects at a distance but only up close. It occurs when the cornea is either curved too steeply, the eye is too long, or both. This condition is progressive and worsens with time. More than 100 million people in the United States are nearsighted, but only 20% of those are born with the condition. Diet, eye exercise, drug therapy, and corrective lenses can all help manage nearsightedness.
