What is the main visual difference between the lunar maria and the rest of the lunar surface? What are the implications of this observation?

Answer to Question 1

The lunar maria are generally smooth compared to the rest of the Moon. The difference in the amount of craters shows that the maria formed more recently than the rest of the lunar surface, at the end of the heavy bombardment phase of the solar system.
