Why does a lamp burn out quicker if it is turned on and off many times, rather than one that is left burning?

The Tungsten filament has a positive temperature coefficient of resistance. Thus when it is first turned on, its current is excessive and the filament for an instant evaporates some of its surface, thereby becoming thinner.
