Answer to Question 1

Basically the greater the mass of the atomic nucleus, the higher the temperature will be needed to forge it. This means more massive stars, with greater gravity to provide contractive energy at the core, will reach higher final temperatures and thus create larger amounts of heavy elements than less massive stars.
