Contrast the internal structures and properties of neutron stars with white dwarf and main sequence stars.

Specifically, what processes in each balance the inward pull of gravity; what are their energy sources; and what are their sizes, densities, and temperatures?

Answer to Question 1

Main sequence: Internal structure is hydrogen fusing to helium, which provides energy. Outward heat pressure balances gravity. Size: around 106 km. Density: 103 kg/m3. Temperature: 107 K in core, 6000 K at surface.
White dwarf: Internal structure is ultra-compressed carbon; energy from residual heat; gravity balanced by electron degeneracy; Size: 104 km; Density: 109 kg/m3; Temperature: 5  104 K at surface.
Neutron star: Internal structure is tight-packed neutrons; gravity balanced by neutron degeneracy; energy from rotational kinetic energy and residual heat; Size: 10 km; Density: 1018 kg/m3; Temperature: unknown.

Your skin wrinkles if you stay in the bathtub a long time because the outermost layer of skin (which consists of dead keratin) swells when it absorbs water. It is tightly attached to the skin below it, so it compensates for the increased area by wrinkling. This happens to the hands and feet because they have the thickest layer of dead keratin cells.
