Participants were shown a string of three consonants to memorize, but active rehearsal was prevented by having participants count backwards from 100 by 3s. After varying delay periods, participants recalled the string. Accuracy declined to 50 percent with a delay as short as six seconds and almost reached zero by 18 seconds.
