In a sense, blocking is an instance of cue overload. It can be eliminated by using a different cue. Suppression is the active weakening of a memory that occurs because the act of retrieval is competitive. Retrieving information strengthens its representation and suppresses competing associations. Providing a different cue does not eliminate suppression.
